IRENE AND CURDIE
By Matt Buchanan
Freely adapted from George MacDonald's The Princess and the Goblin
6 female, 9 male, plus flexible ensemble who play multiple roles. No maximum. Multiple settings. About 75 minutes.
Princess Irene is in grave danger. The behavior of everyone in the castle makes that clear--but she doesn't know why. She also doesn't know why she's the only one who can see her beautiful Great Grandmother, Queen Irene, in her lovely tower room.
Young, brave Curdie, the miner's boy, is worried. The goblins who live inside the mountain where he works are planning something--something terrible. But what?
When Curdie and Irene team up, it's only a matter of time before they've solved both mysteries--but at the cost of great personal peril. But by believing in each other the two young people are able to save their world from destruction.
Irene and Curdie is a fun, scary fairy tale about trust, adventure, and the strength of young people who solve their own problems. It is intended for a family audience and makes a wonderful play for older students to perform specifically for their younger peers.
