LILY
I know. Normally I do. Three shots a day since I was nine. I’m not complaining. Most of the time it’s no big deal. It’s just a fact of life. Like flossing your teeth. But sometimes...you just don’t want to do it. And when your dentist asks you if you’ve been flossing every day, you say, “yeah,” and he looks at your bleeding gums and knows you’re lying. Same thing. Sometimes you get this craving for a dozen sour cream Krispy Kremes straight out of the fryer. But you just took your injection and if you had that much sugar--well, you just say you’re not hungry. Or this guy, who doesn’t totally nauseate you, in fact, he kind of makes you laugh, finally invites you to check out his band after school. You are so dying to go, your stomach is tied up in knots. But you know that you just used your last bottle of insulin, so you tell him “maybe some other time” even though you know he’ll never ask again. Sometimes you just want to break the rules because you’re only seventeen once. You know it’s not good for you, you know you shouldn’t do it, but it shouldn’t kill you.
