If a student production demands more than 12 players, smaller groups of students (3-12) could be employed as various animals in flocks, herds, bevies, etc. during scene changes. In a previous workshop, several students in white shirts and black tux coats played penguins, who wobbled by at the opening of the cafeteria scene (Act I, Sc 4). They went off, pulled their jackets over their heads and re-entered as hyenas fighting over table scraps later in that same scene. Either gender can be employed for this.
The play was developed in a reading by high school drama students at Saint Saviour High School (Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY), but awaits its first full production.

Alice Nye is a pre-teen with a problem. She's a mid-year transfer student who can't find a suitable middle school--until she stumbles over the last entry on her list, a zoo school called the Peaceable Kingdom Wildlife Center. Despite her mother's misgivings, Alice opts to enroll as a human exchange student. Once inside, she confronts diversity she never dreamed of, including four legs, fur, spiny feelers and tails. Though they start off natural enemies, Alice and her animal classmates must quickly learn to co-exist and protect each other from a common enemy that threatens their very existence.
