Drama. 1M, 1F. About 40 minutes. Suitable for high school and up. Inspired by Alfred Lord Tennyson's classic poem, Idylls Of The King. First performance: $45 (this includes permission to make copies of the script as necessary for your production). Each additional performance: $35.
Premiered at Theatre Center Philadelphia with the late C.L. Williams as Merlin and Yvonne Fletcher as Vivien, and went on to a literally "stellar" performance outdoors on a large knoll at the Lansdowne Arts Festival with Theresa Marsh, for whom the role of Vivien was written, giving a captivating performance as the woman whose magic rivaled the great mage of Camelot.
"Shockley's play is finely crafted to a degree not usually found in Arthurian legend; It is never anachronistically modern nor self-consciously 'period,' and the two characters are well-developed and fun to be with."--Welcomat (Philadelphia, PA)
Ageless Merlin, Camelot's great sorcerer, has retreated to Brociliande Island. These are the latter days of the Round Table and the court is filled with intrigue. Merlin is followed to his secret abode by Vivien, an outcast among the courtiers, who professes undying love for the sagely magician. What ensues is a classic game of cat and mouse (but which is which?). Vivien offers Merlin respite from the unbearable loneliness that accompanies great power but at what price?
