Free Scenes

Welcome to the YouthPLAYS Free Scenes page! All of these scenes are from our published plays and can be sorted by cast size and then genre. Please note that what is posted on the website is typically the entire scene.

Scenes are added regularly, so check back regularly!

How it Works

Auditions and the Classroom

These scenes are free for classroom and audition use.

1. Once you find one or more scenes that suit your needs, fill out the Request a Scene form. Please make sure you use an email address that can receive outside emails and that your email account has available space! (Often, student accounts through a school are for internal use only, and our email will bounce, and we've had a number of people write from email accounts that are full. Those emails bounce too.)

2. We do our best to confirm permission within 2 business days, but sometimes it takes longer; give yourself time to hear back. Please make sure that you whitelist emails from the youthplays.com domain, or our email may get stuck in your spam filter!

3. If you'd like to read the entire play from which the scene comes, click on the order link on each scene's page to purchase a perusal copy!

4. Would you like to hear about the latest plays and news (and discounts!) from YouthPLAYS? You'll be asked as part of the Request a Scene Form whether you'd like to opt-in to our email list. We promise not to email you too often and never to share your email.

5. Students, please tell your teachers or directors about YouthPLAYS! Teachers and directors, please consider our plays for production! Remember, our authors make their income from the licensing of their work for production and the payment of royalties. This allows them to create more great plays!

School Theatrical Arts Recognition (STAR) Awards and Thespys

  • We strongly encourage (but do not require) you to purchase a full script for each participant when you compete in the School Theatrical Arts Recognition (STAR) Awards and Thespys. Reading it in its entirety gives you a better understanding of the scene's place (and that of its characters) in the larger play, and your purchase supports the playwright who created the material.
  • On the Request a Scene Form, select Audition and not Competition. Under “Additional Info,” please state that this is for the STAR Awards or Thespys (please note which one).

Forensics and Other Competitions

Purchase one copy (digital or printed) of the complete play from which they come per participant. If necessary, print this page as proof of permission to perform. Do NOT request a scene through this page; just make your purchase.

Showcases, Reviews and Other Public Performances

Purchase one copy (digital or printed) of the complete play from which they come per participant and pay the Single Scene-Monologue Showcase Royalty (one per performance). Be sure to explain in the Note to the Publisher (this will be part of the ordering process) the specifics of your usage. If the play you wish to perform doesn't have the Single Scene-Monologue Showcase Royalty option listed, please write us to activate it for you. Do NOT request a scene through this page; just make your purchase.

We regret that we are unable to provide specific scene suggestions, as our time and staff are limited, and we feel that it's always best for you to read through our selections and find the piece that best fits you. So let's get to it: read on to find a great scene!
